Naming ceremonies are non-religious events designed to celebrate the birth or adoption of a child, providing an opportunity to officially name them in the presence of family and friends. These ceremonies can be highly personalized and are often seen as an alternative to traditional religious christenings or baptisms.

Here’s an overview of what a naming ceremony typically involves:

I will greet your guests and explain the purpose of the ceremony.

Selected readings, poems, or personal messages can be shared by family members or friends.

You then formally announce the child’s name. This can be accompanied by an explanation of the significance or meaning of the name.

Parents, and sometimes grandparents or other significant adults, make promises or commitments to the child, expressing their hopes and intentions for the child’s future.

Instead of godparents, naming ceremonies may include the appointment of guideparents or mentors, who pledge their support and involvement in the child’s life.

We can then do a ritual or symbolic action such as lighting a candle, planting a tree, or creating a memory box. These actions symbolize the start of the child’s journey and the family’s commitment to nurturing them.

I then offer some closing thoughts, often highlighting the significance of the day’s events and the gathered community’s support for the child.

All in all a warm loving event to celebrate someone really special.
